How Dementia Affects Adults with Intellectual Disability

Adults with an intellectual disability require the same early and periodic diagnostic services, community education, and community-based supports for themselves, their caregivers, and the organizations working with them, as do other adults affected by dementia. Early identification is possible with the use of a standard screening instrument that has been developed for people – beginning at age 50 for adults with an intellectual disability and at age 40 for adults with Down syndrome and others at early risk.

This seminar will review basic information about the types of dementia that affect adults, who is most at risk, and review the use of a screening tool that can be used by anyone familiar with the person to screen for dementia.
